The options available are numerous so it can be difficult sometimes to find exactly what you want. The thermostat control can be access from the thermostat itself, the web panel or the mobile application, but their menu differs with various settings that are only available on some devices.

The geofencing feature that comes with this device is less advanced compared to that of Nest. Only a single active smartphone can partake in the geofencing. For two or more people to participate in the geofence, you will need to utilise the third-party services of IFTTT for example. Even though you can use a third party service, the setup is not easy and the feature is not that appealing as the fully integrated geofencing feature offered by Nest.

Although this device is easy to use, there is a price attached to it. Generally, you need to give up a few control when you want an easy to operate device. The same is applicable when using Nest. If you need a device that works once you plug it with little or no control from you, then get Nest. Or if you want to be able to control every single function, consider getting the ecobee4.

Why we like Nest

Most people who are using Nest claim the device is very easy to operate. The smart learning feature it offers minimizes the chances of adjusting the device, besides increasing or reducing the temperature. If you want to do some changes, then go for the generation 3; the screen is much bigger compared to previous models, which makes navigating menus easier.

You don’t need any hub when using this thermostat as most common smart home devices work instantly with Nest. To know if the device you have is compatible with your own Nest thermostat, simply find a “Works with Nest” logo on it. The device is integrated with Nest branded products like Nest Cam and Nest Protect, and also brands like August locks and Haiku fans.

This smart thermostat has a sharp look. It glows orange when heating and blue when cooling. The Nest thermostat will likely start a conversation if you are having visitors around.

Another interesting feature about this smart thermostat is its totally integrated geofencing within multiple accounts, which means you can connect more than one phone to it. The away mode will not be activated provided the connected devices are within the geofence. What you need to do to enjoy this feature is to open a separate Nest account with each phone and connect them to the smart thermostat.

And what we dislike

Nest is not compatible with the Apple products. It also supports almost everything but not Apple HomeKit. Nest thermostat also lacks some external sensors. So any temperature measurements will come directly from the Nest thermostat. You will have to place your nest thermostat in an area that represents your whole home.

Nest Thermostat E – Best Mid-Range Smart Thermostat for Home

This budget-friendly thermostat has a subtler appearance with almost all the nice features Nest has to more. Both ecobee and Nest have nice models that fall under the category of mid-range smart thermostat. The major difference it is because they lack support in some complex HVAC systems. The mid-range model will be a better choice If you want to save money or you will have some HVAC systems that are not compatible with top-level models.

Both the Nest E and the ecobee3 have similar smart features with their costlier counterparts. The unique Nest E still retain most features while the ecobee3 does not have the extra sensor and Alexa speaker (both features are found in ecobee4). As a result, we will the best mid-range smart thermostat to own is the Nest E. Selecting the best thermostat, however, is dependent on what you want; if you desire total control, ecobee3 lite is the right choice. While Nest E is a better option if you prefer easy usage.

The look or appearance of the Nest E is somehow different from other top Nest Models. You cannot really see the frosted screen if you are far from it, unlike what you get when you go for the expensive models.

The Nest E come with just six terminals, unlike the expensive ones that has ten terminals.
