But first, let’s be a bit techie and see how things work, okay? …
The charger dock station
Robotic vacuums can recharge on a charging station (also known as charger dock station) placed on the ground. It takes between 1:15 and 8:00 depending on the models for a full charge.
Some robots do not have a station. You must manually connect a charger to the robot. The best-built vacuum cleaners find their station easily.
Once loaded, a robot sitting on its base continues to consume electricity. An on / off button turns it off, limiting its standby power consumption. Same for the charging station, which consumes as long as it is connected to the mains. Some conveniently have an on / off button that avoids having to unplug them.
The Brushes
A robot vacuum cleaner has one or several builtin brushes:
- One or two lateral brushes, placed on the side of the robot, to clean along the walls and in the corners by bringing the dust towards the center of the robot;
- The main brush, located under the robot, to collect dust and other fibers. Human hair or animal hair tends to wrap itself and it will be necessary to clean it frequently. It is more or less easily removable depending on the model.
Some robot vacuum manufacturers have opted for a direct suction, similar to a sled vacuum cleaner brush.
The dust tank
All robot vacuums work without a bag and collect the dust in a tank, directly accessible either from the top of the robot or from below, which is much less convenient. The capacity of the tank has a limit because of the need to design devices of a reasonable size, since the robots circulate independently in the room. You will need to empty and clean the tank frequently, as well as the filters associated with it.
The programming
The programming of robot vacuums is relatively simple. Just choose between one of the cleaning modes, such as:
- “Auto“, “normal” or “cleaning“, for the complete cleaning of a room;
- “Spot” or “localized” to suck on a specific area (a carpet, for example).
Some models offer different levels of suction power to adjust according to the type of floor (hard floor, wood, carpet).
Some robots can program a delayed or periodic start (every day, every week …). The most basic models only have a simple on / off button.
The sensors
The robots move around the room and change direction as soon as they encounter an obstacle, the goal being to cover the entire area. The most sophisticated models boast of using cameras, ultrasonic or infrared sensors, gyro and other highly sophisticated navigation systems.
Frankly, I did not spot any technology that was more efficient than another. The most important thing is that it works!
In practice, this is not always the case. Robots often stumble (however gently) into obstacles such as chairs or vases on the floor. On the other hand, they detect the empty space, which prevents them from falling down the stairs. Another positive point, the entire room is well covered (even by going several times in the same place). But you have to be a bit forgiving about the result in the corners, along the walls or around the furniture legs.

Virtual walls
They are small blocks that you can place on the floor, which constitute a visible obstacle for the robot and allows the user to limit the evolution of the robot to a part of the room. Simple and useful.

I have had my eye on a robot vacuum for a long time now but just haven’t pulled the trigger on buying one. I really like the iRobot Roomba 880. I feel like Roomba has been at this for a while and probably has some really good technology. I guess the thing that has held me back is the sensors and whether or not the vac will get stuck. As for the risk of getting stuck under a dinning room table or anywhere, I think that the owner of any robot vacuum cleaner should still think as owning a regular vacuum cleaner except that the robot will do the job on it’s own. What I mean by that is for example, just like before, before starting to vacuum with a regular vacuum cleaner, you would put the chairs on the table, have your kids put their toys away, etc.. except that now you can go and enjoy your jogging, shopping, or golf with your friends, then come back to a clean house, and enjoy your favorite television program.

I thought there is only one kind of a robot vaccum but I was amazed when you list 10 of them. I am an Office Cleaner, do you know if they are good in commercial places like I mean big offices or facilities? Do you know if there are for Commercial robot vacuums,too? What I use now is the backpack vacuum,it hurts my back and shoulders if I used it for about half an hour for big offices or facilities. If the capacity of the vacuum to hold dirts and dust is large enough then maybe it is good also on commercial places or offices.I learned a lot on your review and very informative.Thanks a lot! But, on the other hand it might become an excellent opportunity for you if you bought one or more of these robot vacuum cleaners, place them in offices, shops, schools, etc. to operate at night when everybody is away, and all you would have to do is to check on them during the day, say after offices a closed, and before the vacuum cleaners start to operate, to make sure that all is in order, empty the dust containers, and that’s it! No more cleaning yourself. Depending on the type of place and size, the dust container can hold a day or two, or more of dust. You will need to figure this out yourself on a case by case basis.

Wow vacuum technology has come along way. I don’t think i would get one until it can pick up clutter first. and it would be nice if it could climb stairs. And it would be cool if it could detect items like ear rings and other small items. I am sure that they will get there.

I have been wondering for a while now how well a robot vacuum cleaner works. From what I read on your reviews it sounds like any one of these would be a great investment. I didn’t know until I was reading your reviews that these robot vacuum cleaners also swept and mopped as well. I will definitely have to check a little further into one.

Hi John, Thank you for your interesting review on Robot vacuum cleaners. These are something I have been interested in since I first saw them advertised on TV.
Seeing advertisements showing these small cleaners moving across a floor has intrigued me. However, my main thought has been – how could these round objects possibly get dust or dirt out of corners. Because you have explained brushes are included in the mechanism to get into corners, well that makes sense.
With the amount of fur from my small cat I’m not sure that a robot cleaner could deal with that. However, I do like the sound of the Rollibot Genius BL800 because it works on both hard surfaces as well as carpets.

That’s right, the little brushes that are sticking out are meant to reach the corners and sweep the dirt out so that the cleaner can swallow it. You would be amazed how useful it would be for you to have one and how it would keep your home free of all your cat’s hair. Most of them are especially designed for that.
The Rollibot Genius BL800 is one of my favorites too, and you should really treat yourself to it. The price is a bargain.

Hello, sir great review I was looking for one of those robotic vacuums and I thought there was only one brand of cordless robotic vacuums called, Roomba at that time when they just came onto the market was around $1000 and I was not interested in buying an expensive vacuum.Now that I have come across your website I have discovered a large variety of robotic vacuums and most importantly the prices have dropped dramatically you can now get them for around $200 plus dollars.
